Types of Drive Axle
Drive axles can be classified based on their connection type, structural design, and other specific features.
Based on Connection Type
Integral Drive Axle:
The axle is rigidly connected to the final drive and suspended via elastic components, such as springs, to the vehicle’s frame. This setup is typical in non-independent suspension systems.
Split Drive Axle:
Here, the final drive is fixed to the frame, while the wheels are connected to the frame via independent suspension. Each wheel can move independently, providing better stability and comfort.
Steering Drive Axle:
When a drive axle also functions as a steering axle, it is classified as a steering drive axle. This is common in front-wheel-drive vehicles.
Based on Structural Design
Single Reduction Drive Axle:
This is the simplest form of drive axle and is widely used in heavy-duty trucks. It employs hypoid spiral bevel gears and is ideal for applications requiring a gear ratio below six.
Double Reduction Drive Axle:
